What is sildenafil?

  • Sildenafil is meant to relax muscles ensuring an increased blood flow in certain areas of the body.
  • Sildenafil is the generic name of Viagra. This drug is effective for erectile dysfunction treatment. There is also another brand name of sildenafil – Revatio – that is prescribed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and to improve exercise capacity both in women and men.
  • In some cases sildenafil is used for other purposes as well.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking sildenafil?

  • It isn't recommended to take sildenafil if you are under a nitrate containing medication for heart problems or chest pain, namely isosorbide dinitrate (Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, ISMO, Monoket) and nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid and others). In addition, some recreational drugs or “poppers”, like nitrite or amyl nitrate contain nitrate as well. Using a nitrate medicine and sildenafil at the same time may lead to a strong decrease of blood pressure resulting in fainting, heart attack or stroke.
  • A very small number of people who took sildenafil reported a sudden vision loss. Such an effect was provoked by the decrease of blood flow supplying the optic nerve. Doctors haven't ascertained yet whether sildenafil has been responsible for the loss of eyesight. The risk group includes people who suffer from diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure, have a history of eye problems, smoke or are 50 years and older.
  • Take sildenafil with caution in case you have:
    • heart rhythm problems or heart disease;
    • a 6-month history of heart rhythm disorder, a heart attack or stroke;
    • coronary artery disease;
    • too high or too low blood pressure;
    • congestive heart failure;
    • kidney disease;
    • liver disease;
    • a blood cell disorder, e.g. leukemia, multiple myeloma or sickle cell anemia;
    • a bleeding disorder, like hemophilia;
    • a stomach ulcer;
    • retinitis pigmentosa (this term stands for an inherited condition of the eye);
    • a physical deformity of the penis (Peyronie's disease, for instance);
    • or if, due to some health problems, sexual activity is contraindicated for you.
  • In case you have one of the conditions listed above, you should either not use sildenafil or adjust your dosage very thoroughly.
  • FDA pregnancy category B: sildenafil is not expected to have a negative effect on a fetus. However, if you are planning to take the medication during pregnancy, consult with your doctor first.
  • No clinic studies considering the effect of sildenafil on a nursing baby haven't been conducted yet. So, if you are breastfeeding and take this drug, it is better to inform your doctor.

How should I take sildenafil?

  • Each dose should be taken with a glass of water.
  • Don't take fat saturated meals before using Viagra, as it slows down its effect.
  • Take sildenafil when it is necessary. The pill acts 30-90 minutes after being swallowed, provided that sexual stimulation occurs. In other words, the drug won't work without sexual stimulation.
  • Sildenafil should be taken only one time a day, i.e. you have to wait until 24 hours pass between two doses.
  • Viagra should be stored at room temperature. Keep it away from heat and moisture.

What happens if I miss a dose?

  • As Viagra is taken when needed, you are unlikely to miss a dose.
  • In case you missed a dose of Viagra, take it as soon as you remember. If you see that it is almost time for the next dose of Viagra, skip the missed one and return to your normal schedule. It isn't recommended to use two doses to catch up.

What happens if I overdose?

  • In case overdosage is suspected, you should seek immediate medical assistance. Among overdosage symptoms irregular heartbeat, fainting, lightheadedness, chest pain and nausea have to be mentioned.

What should I avoid while taking sildenafil?

  • Don't drink alcohol that may aggravate the medication's side effects.
  • Don't use other drugs for impotence, like yohimbine (Yocon, Yodoxin) or alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex).

What are the possible side effects of sildenafil?

  • Inform you doctor right away in case you have dizziness, nausea, pain or tingling in the chest, arms, jaw or neck during an intercourse.
  • If you suffer from a sudden eye-sight loss, seek emergency medical help.
  • Go to the doctor if you notice such allergic reaction as difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue and throat, or hives.
  • In case you remarked the following side effects you should stop taking sildenafil as soon as possible:
    • heavy feeling or chest pain, sweating, pain that spreads to the shoulder or arm, general ill feeling and nausea;
    • irregular heartbeat;
    • swelling in your feet, hands or ankles;
    • shortness of your breath;
    • vision changes;
    • lightheadedness, fainting;
    • a long-standing painful penis erection lasting 4 hours or longer.
  • Keep using sildenafil but consult with your doctor if you suffer from
    • headache;
    • stuffy nose;
    • warmth or redness in your face, neck, or chest;
    • upset stomach;
    • back pain.
  • Like with any drug, sildenafil may provoke other side effects, so if they reach a certain level of intensity, seek medical help.
