What is tadalafil?

  • Tadalafil is used to relax muscles of the body and to increase the flow of blood to certain areas.
  • Tadalafil is effective for erectile dysfunction treatment (i.e. impotence treatment).
  • In some cases tadalafil is used for other purposes than those mentioned here.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking tadalafil?

  • It isn't recommended to take tadalafil if you are currently treating heart problems or chest pain with nitrate drugs, such as isosorbide dinitrate (like Dilatrate-SR, Isordil, Sorbitrate), isosorbide mononitrate (for example, Imdur, ISMO, Monoket) and nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitrolingual, Nitro-Dur, Nitro-Bid, and others). Moreover, some other medications, like amyl nitrate or nitrite drugs (known as “poppers”), contain nitrates as well. Mixing tadalafil with a nitrate drug may lead to a strike, heart attack, fainting or an intense decrease of blood pressure.
  • A very small number of people who were under tadalafil reported an unexpected loss of vision. Such an effect is provoked by a decrease of the flow of blood to the optic nerve of the eye. Doctors haven't ascertained yet if these problems resulted from tadalafil. The risk group includes patients who suffer from diabetes, too high blood pressure, a history of eye problems, heart disease, high cholesterol level, or smokers with more than 50 years experience.
  • Those people who have one of the following conditions should take tadalafil with caution:
    • high or low blood pressure;
    • a recent history a heart attack (within the past 90 days);
    • a recent history of stroke or congestive heart failure (within the past 6 months);
    • a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia;
    • heart disease or heart rhythm problems;
    • liver problems;
    • kidney problems (or in case you are on dialysis);
    • retinitis pigmentosa (an inherited condition of the eye);
    • angina (chest pain);
    • a stomach ulcer;
    • a disorder of blood cells, like multiple myeloma, sickle cell anemia or leukemia;
    • a penis physical deformity (i.e. Peyronie's disease);
    • if your doctor prescribed you to give up sexual activity for health safety.
  • Patients having one of these conditions aren't recommended to take tadalafil, or should at least adjust their dosage and have special medical tests during treatment.
  • FDA pregnancy category B: tadalafil isn't meant for women. However, clinical studies showed that this drug has no negative impact on the fetus. You shouldn't use tadalafil if you are already pregnant or planning to become one.
  • Despite the fact that tadalafil isn't commonly prescribed to women, you shouldn't use this drug if you are breastfeeding. It is still unknown whether tadalafil appears in breast milk or could make harm to a nursing child.
  • Patients who are over 65 should better opt for a lower dosage. Adjust your dose before starting a course of treatment with tadalafil.

How should I take tadalafil?

  • Each dose should be taken with water.
  • Don't take fat saturated meals before taking tadalafil, as such nutrition is likely to decrease the drug's effect, slowing down its work.
  • The medication should be used only if necessary, basically 30-60 minutes before having sex. Keep in mind that tadalafil is effective for helping a patient to achieve an erection only if he is involved in physical intercourse. In other words, tadalafil is active only after sexual stimulation being provided: no erection occurs just by swallowing a pill.
  • It isn't recommended to take tadalafil more than one time a day. You should wait for 24 hours to pass between two doses of Cialis.
  • Store tadalafil at room temperature. Keep the drug away from heat and moisture.

What happens if I miss a dose?

  • Tadalafil doesn't imply any dosing schedule to be followed: you take the medication only when you need it.

What happens if I overdose?

  • In case you suspect overdosage, you should seek immediate medical assistance.
  • If you took too much tadalafil, it may result in such symptoms as irregular heartbeat, fainting, chest pain, feeling light-headed or nausea.

What should I avoid while taking tadalafil?

  • Don't drink alcohol when you are under tadalafil, otherwise the drug's side effects may become more intense.
  • In some cases grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with the medication. If you are on a diet and have to take grapefruit, you should better discuss the usage of tadalafil with your health care provider before starting treatment.
  • Keep away from taking any other medications for erectile dysfunction treatment, like yohimbine (Yocon, Yodoxin and others) or alprostadil (Caverject, Muse, Edex).

What are the possible side effects of tadalafil?

  • Stop taking tadalafil and seek medical help in case you noticed such side effects as nausea; dizziness; numbness or tingling sensations in your chest, jaw, neck or arms during sex. You shouldn't procrastinate; otherwise these side effects may become serious and have a negative effect on your health.
  • If you have sudden vision changes or even a vision loss after taking tadalafil, you should look for immediate doctor's help.
  • Stop using tadalafil and go to the doctor if you noticed such signs of allergic reaction as difficulty breathing; hives; swelling of the face, tongue, throat or lips.
  • Give up using tadalafil and seek emergency medical help if any of the following side effects has developed to a certain level of intensity:
    • shortness of breath;
    • irregular heartbeat;
    • swelling in the hands, feet and ankles;
    • pain in the chest or heavy feeling in the chest, pain which spreads to the arm or shoulder, sweating, nausea, general ill feeling;
    • vision changes;
    • fainting, feeling light-headed;
    • penis erection that is painful or lasts 4 hours and more.
  • Keep on using tadalafil but consult with your doctor in case you suffer from less serious side effects of tadalafil, like:
    • upset stomach;
    • stuffy nose;
    • headache;
    • warmth or redness in the face, chest or neck;
    • back pain.
  • Some patients may have other side effects than those listed above, so if you notice one and find it quite unpleasant and bothersome, you should seek medical assistance.

What drug(s) may interact with tadalafil?

    It isn't recommended to mix tadalafil with any of the listed below medications:
  • nitroglycerin-type drugs for the chest or heart pain treatment, like amyl nitrite, isosorbide mononitrate, nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate even if you take them occasionally.
