How talking to someone can help you process your feelings
There are often times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed by our feelings and we find ourselves thinking I need someone to talk to. There are a number of reasons why talking to others helps us to process our feelings, this can be processing both positive and negative feelings.
By verbalising our feelings it can help us to gain clarity on what we are experiencing. Emotions and inherently complex and they can become all-consuming and overwhelming. The more we bottle up these feelings and keep them inside, the harder they can become to manage. When we discuss our feelings it can help us to identify what the cause of the feelings may be and along with this may come potential solutions to any issues that you might be facing.
When we share how we are feeling with people that we trust (this could be a friend or family member, or it could be a therapist) it can help to give us a sense of validation in our feelings. It also helps to build a feeling that you are being understood. When you know that someone is actively listening to you and empathising with how you feel it can help to give you a sense of reassurance. This allows us to know that we are not alone in the emotions that we are feeling and it can help to build a sense of connection with others.
Finally, talking about how we are feeling can be a great form of emotional release. It can help to create a sense of lifting the weight from our shoulders and allowing us to reduce the intensity of the feelings over time.
