How to choose colours to match your skin tone

Just like getting a new hairstyle, choosing the right colours to match our skin tone can be a tricky process. Whilst we know that there could be a chance of looking great if we tried some new hues, it’s a bit of a plunge to try. How do we know which colours to go for?

Some might argue that it’s as easy as going shopping and trying on clothes in the fitting rooms. However, we all know that the lighting in these places is often a little harsh and if we want to save some time with all that hassle, it’s good to know a few fundamentals about colour before heading off to the shops.

Step one is to simply look at the skin on your forearm. Is it fair, pale, olive, medium or dark?

Fair to pale – If you hide from the sun, have freckles and red, blonde or light brown hair then chances are your skin is pale. The key to choosing colours for fair skin is to choose something that complements and contrasts and that will bring some colour to your complexion. Darker colours are best but you can choose lighter shades too, if they are paired with a darker base. Ideal colours to pick include dark blue, brown, grey, burgundy and bottle green. Colours to avoid include neutrals, pastel shades and bold colours. For neutrals, you can choose deeper hues like sand, khaki, camel and slate grey, for example.

Olive to medium – This is considered a warmer skin tone and is open to a choice of more colours from the spectrum. Tones that are brighter or bolder tend to work well with this skin tone, so consider choosing magenta over mauve, for example. White is also a great and versatile tone that complements a warmer skin tone. Colours to avoid would be anything based on yellows and greens that sit too closely to your skin tone. These might include light browns, mustard yellows and if you want to go all-white or pastel, make sure you have a good enough tan to carry it off. Darker skin – The great thing about darker skin tones is that there really are no colours that are out of bounds. There are a wealth of shades and tones that will complement darker skin as there is little risk of looking washed out against paler colours such as the problems experienced by paler skin tones. The only tip is to choose wisely and not go overboard. Choose a bright colour or two and make sure your outfit is held together and the colours complement each other. You don’t want to look like you’ve had a fight in a paint shop!
