Cyproheptadine is used for:

- In some cases the medication is applied to SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction treatment.
Do NOT use Cyproheptadine if:
- you have an allergic reaction to some ingredients of cyproheptadine
- you are breastfeeding
- you are currently taking or took within the past two weeks monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors)
- you suffer from peptic ulcer, narrow-angle glaucoma, obstruction of the urinary tract, an enlarged prostate, or if you are an aged person and have poor health
- In case one of these conditions can be referred to you, consult with your health care provider before starting treatment with cyproheptadine.
Before using Cyproheptadine:
- There are certain health conditions which are likely to interact with cyproheptadine. If one of the listed below medical conditions can be applied to you, discuss the usage of cyproheptadine with your doctor:
- if you are already pregnant or planning to become one
- if you are under either a prescriptive or a nonprescriptive medication, dietary supplement or herbal preparation
- if you experience an allergic reaction to definite meals, drugs and substances
- if you suffer from stomach problems, asthma, prostate problems, glaucoma, difficulty urinating, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, gastric or urinary tract obstruction, heart disease or seizures
- Certain DRUGS CAN INTERACT with cyproheptadine. Before you start taking cyproheptadine, inform your doctor if you are currently using any other medicine, especially:
- MAO inhibitors (for instance, phenelzine) to prevent psychotic reactions
- SSRIs (serotonin reuptake inhibitors), such as fluoxetine, otherwise their effectiveness will be reduced
- Some other interactions may occur as well. That is why before you begin treatment with cyproheptadine you had better consult with your health care provider about the drugs you are taking. See your doctor if you start or stop using the drug, or if you change the dose.
How to use Cyproheptadine :
- You should use the medication, following all the given instructions. Consult with the medicine's label for the exact dosage.
- Take cyproheptadine with food, in case its usage results in upset stomach.
- If you occasionally forgot to take a dose of cyproheptadine timely, you have to take it the soonest possible. However, if it is time for the next dose to use, you can just skip the missed one and after that return to your standard dosing schedule. Never use more than one dose at once.
- If you still have some questions about cyproheptadine, its effectiveness and safety issues and its usage, consult with your pharmacist.
Important safety information:
- Keep in mind that cyproheptadine may provoke dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness and blurred vision. Keep from driving, operating heavy machinery or performing tasks that require mental activity until you know how your body reacts to the drug. The usage of cyproheptadine – either alone or with other medicines or alcohol may reduce your ability to do these tasks.
- While you are using cyproheptadine, it is better to limit the consumption of alcohol beverages, as the medication is likely to aggravate the negative effect of alcohol and other depressants on your health. In case you have some questions considering the depressants, you had better consult with your pharmacist.
- Once you are taking the drug, you should sit up slowly and stand up slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down as soon as you experience dizziness, weakness or lightheadedness.
- In some cases the usage of cyproheptadine leads to increased sensitivity to the sun. You should avoid exposure to the sun, tanning booths and sunlamps until you see how your body reacts to it. In case you have to stay outdoors for some time, it is better to use protective clothing or sunscreen.
- Remember this medicine may affect the results of medical tests, like allergy tests or lab tests (for example, pituitary-adrenal response). That is why you have to inform your doctor and laboratory personnel before having these tests.
- In the ELDERLY age you should take cyproheptadine with caution, as with age you can become more sensitive to the drug's effects.
- This medication isn't approved for use in CHILDREN who are younger than 2 years old. The effectiveness and safety of cyproheptadine for small children haven't been confirmed yet. Keep in mind that the usage of cyproheptadine can lead to seizures and excitation in young children.
- PREGNANCY and BREASTFEEDING: If you are going to become pregnant, it is recommended to discuss the usage of cyproheptadine during pregnancy with your health care provider. It is still unknown whether cyproheptadine appears in breast milk, so keep from breastfeeding a baby while you are under this medication.

- In case you experience one of these SEVERE allergic reaction, you should seek emergency medical help:
- severe allergic reactions (itching; rash; difficulty breathing; swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue; tightness in the chest; hives)
- unusual tiredness
- stomach pain
- yellowing eyes or skin
- hallucinations
- hysteria
- mental or mood changes
- sleeplessness
- dark urine
- convulsions
- difficulty urinating
- The expiry date is indicated in each blister. Usually the shelf life of cyproheptadine is two years from the date when it was made. The drug's shelf life varies from one batch to another, according to the date of its manufacture.
